I was asleep but the cold woke me up. I looked at myself in the mirror and noticed that I had these bags under my eyes. I felt a little under the weather too. I couldn't help this feeling that somehow I was missing something. I got dressed as quick as I could. Pulled up a clean pair of Levis, put on a T-shirt that was folded neatly and a pair of shoes I hadn't worn in a long time. I looked down at them and noticed that the shoes were torn in places that I hadn't remembered and felt like they didn't seem to fit me as they once must have. So with as little money as I had, I walked passed the Starbucks and headed straight into the Footlocker Athletic Footwear store and bought the shoes in the window. That did the trick. All the sales staff were smiling. I looked at my watch and realized that I did have a meeting downtown with my agent and better hurry this up. But even though I was late, I thought "Screw this, I'm walking here." That's exactly what happened.

Wizzard Media Picks up Tiki Bar TV but drops something.

Ever since "Tomgue Twister" we have been treated to the fabulous new aspect ratio, called in the business, '16x9', the 'X' according to Apple is pronounced '10' but the rest of the world says 'bi' . According to Apple 'bi' means 2, but the rest of the world thinks that's 'gay'. That is neither here nor there, the point is not 'X' but 'Y'.

Why has Wizzard Media sensored the Conspiracy Guy? Are we really supposed to believe that flash can't operate in widescreen pseudo-high definition? I find that a stretch. Steel doesn't even melt until 3000 degrees. And no way was Nixon at some Pepsi convention in Dallas.

Here is a hint, her first name is longer than her last.

Limey Coming Back

It is fairly certain that we will be seeing and hearing more from our early tiki bar fly "The Limey" He appeared in four episodes (2, 3, 4 & 7) and developed a great character but was never seen again. Dr. Tiki knows that he was very popular and has noted the many requests to have him back on the show.

Now it seems that the new Limey episode has been shot, but man, editing can be slave driving devil woman. Will this episode ever be cut down to 5 minutes of high value material or will it lie around like an Orson Welles project gone sour, eating up gigabyte upon gigabyte of hard disk space with nothing to show for it.

Do it doc, we are depending on you. Drive a stake through the heart of the vampriss of editing and deliver the goods. We want Limey and we won't leave until we get some. (Maybe you could send me a frame from the madness, just to let us see his face, while we are waiting.)

10 WEEKS and Counting

We are in unchartered waters here. We have never waited more than ten weeks for a new episode. In fact, since 90% of us discovered Tiki Bar TV from or because of Steve Jobs plug of the show in October '06, we have not had to wait mor than 6 weeks and usually only 4. So what does this all mean? I will try a seance this weekend and try to find out.

On December 5th the new episode came out, "Red Handed" it was released 35 days after "Dry Halloween". The show's have been release now usually at the 4 week mark or the five week mark. This means that episode 24 should have been expected to come out by January 10th.

The time between them has varied quite a bit. If you recall, the time between episodes for the initial spat of shows was less than a week each. This now seems unbelievable. Then came the long breaks following it. If we concentrate on the production speed for the shows only after Steve Jobs blew the lid off the operation, you will find that the wait between episodes is very close to 4 weeks each.

I believe that Dr. Tiki still would like a twice-a-month schedule and that that would be the right for maximum crowd pleasing, but I have concluded that a once-a-month is both practical and pleasant.

Jeffrey Macpherson has concocted a strange recipe for TV stardom: ignore Hollywood, build a cheap set in your apartment in Vancouver and film your show with a few pals while all of you get drunk. Yet somehow the 32-year-old Canadian has emerged as an early breakout star of the dawning era of video podcasting.

Macpherson plays the puckish hero of Tiki Bar TV, a periodic series of loopy, gag-filled vignettes--each lasts only a few minutes--available only by download from his Web site, Tikibartv.com or Apple's iTunes service for the iPod. He sports a doctor's white smock, stethoscope and prescription pad, and when a character shows up for a consultation, Macpherson (a.k.a. Dr. Tiki) prescribes therapy: a potent drink with a fancy name and myriad kinds of liquor. To keep it real, Macpherson and his motley cast drink the elixir on camera and off; this is one reason it takes them six hours to shoot what gets boiled down to, say, six minutes.

Yet Tiki Bar TV has won a rabid following since its debut early last year (the 17th episode went online June 5). Each segment draws 300,000 or so viewers, rivaling the reach of many cable shows, such as CNBC's Mad Money. Macpherson and his costars get recognized on the street by fans. Viewers have posted photos of Tiki Bar TV parties, one acolyte sent in a heavy-metal version of the show's perky theme song, others dressed up as Tiki Bar characters for Halloween--and even Hollywood has come calling.

"I don't think the show I am doing at my house is going to replace a prime-time show," Macpherson allows, "but the next show I do might."

Podcasting was audio-only at its start in 2004; video popped up in October when Apple unveiled a video iPod. Podcasters rely on Internet downloads to computers and the new iPod (usually via iTunes), and viewers watch the stored shows at their leisure. Podcast shows can also can be viewed on such sites as YouTube, which has fueled a sudden boom in online video by hosting anyone's clips free of charge. Only a handful of video podcasts were up on iTunes in the first month; today the menu of videos has exploded.

This onslaught is cheap. Macpherson films a Tiki Bar bit for $100. Zapping it out costs less than a penny per fan; Apple even covers his Web-hosting costs. Thus old-line TV looks cumbersome and costly, with its legacy of satellites and towers, hundreds of TV stations and cable networks, million-dollar budgets and spoiled stars, and a need to reach big audiences.

Macpherson argues podcasts may transform television as profoundly as cable TV did. Some incumbents concur. NBC Chief Jeffrey Zucker decrees that all NBC shows must develop a digital distribution strategy: "No longer is content just for the TV screen," he told a group of advertisers in May. MTV, which shrank the attention spans of teens in the 1980s, now aims to do it again--it just launched MTVU Uber, an online channel for short-form shows. Yahoo and Amazon.com are in similar pursuit.

Macpherson's twisted path to Web stardom began five years ago, when he embarked on a Hollywood dream. He had put in a year at film school but detested it and worked as a production manager for car commercials. In 2000 he directed his first feature film, a well-received independent drama. Come Together was about a Scotch-guzzling, pot-smoking greeting-card writer who vows to break up his ex-girlfriend's wedding and win her back. It never got distributed; only 5,000 people saw it.

He commuted from Vancouver to Los Angeles in 2001, landed an agent at International Creative Management and signed a movie deal with MTV. Quickly it all fell apart. MTV had wanted a film on ecstasy, the euphoria drug; then it switched to methamphetamine--newsier, but far uglier. "A meth addict and an ecstasy addict are very different beasts," he says. Then it wanted a miniseries. Then MTV bailed, Macpherson's agent quit ICM, and when no one else picked him up, he packed up and slunk home to Vancouver.

Back at his small apartment, he decided, on a lark, to install a 1950s-style tiki bar, complete with palm fronds and lots of rum. Soon he invited friends over and started filming short, goofy segments.

The feel was assiduously absurd and schlocky. Props drove plot: Macpherson became Dr. Tiki after finding an old doctor's coat he had worn to a Halloween party. Soon he added a bartender, Johnny Johnny (played by a grade school pal), and a vivacious vixen named LaLa (an ex-girlfriend). Guest stars joined in (they got to make up their own characters and plotlines), and the cast would get visibly tipsier as a skit unfolded.

The real star of each episode is its special drink. "Love in the South Pacific" is laced with six liquors; it was invented by the Tiki Bar folks, though they are amateur mixologists. "People think we are the Martha Stewart of cocktails. We're not. Inauthenticity is our hallmark," Macpherson says.

Each segment has a freeze-frame of the drink recipe, often showing real brands--Beefeater and Bombay Sapphire gin, Skyy vodka, Southern Comfort. Johnny Johnny (played by Kevin Gamble) trashes lesser labels, at one point calling Sauza Gold tequila "one of the crappier blends you can get." Soon an Internet rumor had it that Tiki Bar TV was a clever front for a liquor company.

It isn't, but its potential--for good and bad--jars some spirits marketers, who fret over any fallout and trademark infringement but also grow giddy over how great this ad platform might be. One marketing chief for a high-end brand, angered by the unauthorized use of his product in a Tiki Bar bit, berated Macpherson on the phone. Minutes later he called back-- to discuss how to work out a sponsorship.

That will be tough, Dr. Tiki concedes, given the proud-to-imbibe ethos of his show. "On TV liquor doesn't make you drunk, it just makes you popular at clubs," he says with a snort. But he believes that one day he may be able to exact a fat premium for clever product placements. "Imagine if you could put a product in the 'dead parrot' sketch," Macpherson says, referring to a famous Monty Python bit. "Imagine what that would be worth."

Until then he relishes the creative latitude of podcasting and his ability to reach legions of viewers without having to kowtow to the meddlesome, unhip Hollywood suits who once nagged him. Some TV sitcoms air flubbed outtakes as the credits roll at the end, but he blithely runs them smack in the middle of an episode. And he revels in his freedom to offend: TV needs the widest possible audience, while Macpherson need lure only the few who "get it."

"We got a lot of hate mail saying, 'You guys think you're funny?'" he says happily.

Macpherson foresees a day when thousands of new-guard filmmakers, aspiring pros with basic editing, lighting and cinematography skills, will be able to sidestep old-line media and draw large audiences online. Hollywood will hire some of them. A Viacom network suit called him recently, hoping to enlist him to make a podcast for the Web. Leery of an overseer who would give him "program notes" on what should be revised, Macpherson declined. "It would be a step backwards. I have a show and total control--why do I want network notes?"

For now he plans to stick to his more subversive pursuits, as he has since his pithy sign-off on the very first episode of Tiki Bar TV: "Thank you so much for joining us on the podcast pilot of The Tiki Bar. If you'd like to see more of this, or even if you don't, I couldn't give a rat's ass. It's the Internet. Just try and [fucking] stop us."

10-year-olds Making Newscasts

Doctor Tiki started young and Johnny Johnny was right there with him. Says Doctor Tiki: I found the cable feed to my building. I was doing what Rocketboom is doing. That's my bedroom. I can't seem to get my shows out of my own house. And I have about the same amount of equipment that I do now.

Here is what Johnny Johnny said on the same topic: As kids, we loved the idea of having our own television stations, and actually went about setting up two of Canada's smallest cable networks. We found a way to splice into the cable feed coming in to our respective homes, and by adding a switcher into the head of the line, were able to intercept the feed coming into the house and replace it with a feed of our own - which was usually us, reading the news, live, from behind a desk in our respective studios (bedrooms).

We often traded reports so that our loyal viewers could get different stories from across the neighbourhood (by viewers, I mean his grandparents, and the tenants downstairs at my house). Like it or not, when we flipped the switch and intercepted the cable feeds for our respective buildings, you either watched us or you watched static. No joke.

Sadly, as most of the shows were live, not much recorded footage exists, and that which does exist is so god awful that I'd never post it. We quickly grew out of our respective mini-broadcasting phases (repeated complaints from the tenants helped speed along the process) but we never really got it out of our systems. If only there was a way to broadcast to a bigger audience...

Enter VIDEO BLOGGING. Podcasting - in VIDEO. Now, we're older, fatter, drunker, and we have access to better technology. So we decided to relive the glory days and has relaunched our show - with cocktails.

Behind The Vodcasts That Rock

“My neighbors must be getting suspicious,” admits Jeff Macpherson, creator and star of iTunes hit “Tiki Bar TV.” As well they should because Jeff turns his place into a Tiki hut to film a strange sitcom where a bartender, a babe, and Jeff as “Dr. Tiki” weave scenarios around an exotic drink recipe in this tricked-out bachelor pad. “There’s no script of any kind,” says the good doctor. He and his cast start with a basic premise and “we make it up as we go along” and then he pulls it into some kind of sense on the editing deck.

Weird but highly watchable, “Tiki Bar TV” has collected over 260,000 subscribers for the five-minute episode.(ed. note: Leo LaPorte's This Week in Tech also has about 260,000 subscribers) In fact, Steve Jobs used a clip from the show during his fall introduction of the new iPods and the addition of video to iTunes. Macpherson’s show had been available through RSS feeds since early in 2005. When he pitched the program to Apple execs last year, they first realized it was just as easy to hook a video file to RSS as a podcast audio file. Dr Tiki himself is no newcomer to show biz; he started as an indie and commercial filmmaker who moved to script writing in recent years. The emergence of cheap Web video distribution lured him back into film, so “Tiki Bar TV” is unusually well-edited and polished.

Like a lot of vodcasts, some of what is best about “Tiki Bar TV” is a necessary consequence of haphazard production and catch-as-catch-can, low-end technology. Macpherson uses an old consumer-grade minicam, a newer three-chip Sony DSR-200, and a borrowed microphone. He has a two-cam setup in his apartment but no one’s left to operate the cameras when he’s in the scene, so you only see panning and zooming when Dr. Tiki himself is off camera. His two stage lights, discarded by a production house, have a habit of shorting out in midscene. And that unique soft-focus and vibrant coloring of “Tiki Bar TV” is a necessary accommodation to working with high-end and low-end input devices.

Early Version of Tiki Bar Discovered

Found by tourist hikers in a provincial park, and in remarkable shape considering its age, this 'movie' is what is considered by experts to be the earliest known artifact of the 'Tiki Bar' species. Though earlier records of 'Dr. Tiki' , 'Drink-Bot' and 'The Pirate' have been noted, this is the earliest record of convergence of these classes along with early 'Limey' and an unconfirmed sighting of 'The Stranger'. Johnny-Johnny in a rare un-fezzed state. This film seems to have been shot in a native format of 16 mm.

Though the main forum seems to be a-buzz with the idea of Sarah being invited to 'play' a role in the hit comedy-drinking podcast "Tiki Bar TV", they seem to have forgotten that although Sarah may be able to perform her limited duties as 'Moderator' at the forum and run the 'Shamboree' on Sundays, she can certainly not abandon her obligations to poor and needy Belizians, to go flying up to the Great White North. Who would be there to wrap up the sickly? Impossible, it simply won't be happening anytime soon.

This patient featured here is especially important to me. I have followed his recovery for many months. I am happy to report he is doing well and considered to be still off the wagon.

Come Together Review in Variety By Ken Eisener from late 2001

Promising young talents shine brightly in "Come Together," a smart,stylish dramedy that playfully examines the detritus of a failed relationship. Well-shot DV effort provides a breakout role for Tygh Runyan, who has already done several offbeat indies but here suggests enough sizzle and subtlety to pilot a much glossier vehicle.

The compact, dark-browed Runyan plays Ewan, a diffident Easterner hitting the West Coast to attend the wedding of his ex, Charlotte (Laura Harris, who also produced). He's still pining for the blond-haired looker, and flashbacks show how he muffed their big amour. Now he's working on an extremely vague plan to win her back, although locking horns with her smarmy new fiance (Russell Porter) doesn't seem to be a well-considered part of it.

Underage Amy (winsome Eryn Collins) complicates things when she shows up at his temporary digs looking for the tenant on vacation. Now she won't go away.

The helmer's script is refreshingly nonjudgmental about where these relationships are going, and they go to unpredictable places. But despite lots of screen time, the central dynamic between Ewan and Charlotte is never quite clear. Macpherson seems content to let Harris -- who habitually whispers her lines -- tilt her head and give off sullen and soulful glares when direct conversation is needed by both Ewan and the audience.

The peripherals are all solid, however, thanks to a strong supporting cast and clever use of unrecognizable Vancouver locations. Smooth editing goes for maximum contrast in rich color schemes, supported by good combo of electronic and alt-rock music. Opening credits are unusually well designed for such a low-budget special, and short running time is just right.

Below is my favorite bit from the show so far, it comes from all places Episode 6 - Interlude. I like it because it shows us a true glimpse of the humor and talent of our creator/director/star. A rare wordy shot.

Pirate: A pirate am I, and a pirate I be. Two plus two minus one is three. Aw crap, that's the shortest goddamn claw-hand I ever seen. Where did he lose his hand? What point did he succumb to the loss of his limb? I was just mindin' my own business, wandering around in front of a nice painted backdrop like this one. There is little doubt that someone must be dead. But is it in fact the crew from Tiki Bar TV? There have been clues sprinkled thoughout their album covers. The most strinking one being this one from the famous "Abbott Road" album which is depicted above. Note how the Robot like figure in the back appears poised to use its laser beam eyes on the group to vaporize them.

Although the drawings look very much like a storyboard. I am afraid that they have been reverse engineered. Doctor Tiki and Johnny-Johnny and others involved all sing the same song when it comes to the idea of scripts and pre-planning. At best they seem to have a kernel of an idea. I have to say it, I have a lot of very resourceful assistants. I may have jumped a little too quick and a little too far with my assertion that the photo was a fake. The upside of this is that I did manage to get a few knowledgeable persons to step forward and turn over enough evidence to make something possible that at the start didn't seem to be, namely, the verification of the photo.

Let me take you through the necessary hoops: (for clarity, I will refer to the Patty O'Furniture photo as ‘StoneTemple’, the 'iTunes' image as just that.

1) The resolution differences have been easily explained as compression issues with jpeg format.

2) A real issue for me as I re-examined my case was that her teeth had more detail in the ‘StoneTemple’ version than the 'iTunes' one. It seemed unlikely that this would have been added to the 'StoneTemple' photo.

3) As for Patty O’Furniture’s standing with the good doctor. I must admit that there may be no single person with better standing than Patty. He is likely to be one of the earliest fans of the show, (not including people who knew the cast and crew directly.) He started a fan club after 6 episodes had been aired and only 40 comments had been posted, an early adopter, to say the least. (BTW: If you too happen to be one of these early birds, drop me a line and let me know how in the great vastness of the internet, that you found this little gin joint.)

I've decided to start a "Lala, Tiki Bar Star Fanclub."
Since I'm the first one...I voted myself as president.

And the ulitmated mark of distinction, there is only one single photo on the current forum site and the original blogspot site that was placed by the webmaster. Who is that picture of? Not Doctor Tiki or Johnny-Johnny or even Lala. The picture is of none other than, Patty O’Funiture. Both sites state “Send us your pics” but only the one photo has ever been accepted. So in his own way Patty is a pioneer and leader. “You’re a better man than I, Gunga Din.”

4) Finally, a very observent reader seems to have recognized the wall that Lala is standing in front of. It just so happens to have a partial of the name StoneTemple Nightclub painted on it.
How convenient is that!

The final step would be to locate and verify this wall fragment and claim that this so called “Shroud of Vancouver” was in fact the “Holy Tiki Mug”, the real McCoy. That is what I set out to do and that is what I can now tell you that I have done.

This picture on first glance does make a P.I.'s heart skip a beat, but in a rare sober moment with closer scrutiny it becomes clear.

Well the picture ain't real, it has messy digital paw prints all over it. I at first thought it was rather bold of the perp to use the main iTunes graphic, but then it occurred to me. The are no other known pictures of Lala. He had know choice but to risk it, in plain sight. His skills are great. To clean up the colorized version of Lala so cleanly, especially the eyes, he deserves lots of kudos. But the give away was in the poor match of resolution between the grafted photos.

It would just be cheap journalism to let you see the whole picture.

When Apple (AAPL ) Chief Executive Steve Jobs flashed a clip of the video blog Tiki Bar TV during the October launch of Apple's new video iPod, he turned the rollickingly sophomoric show into an instant online hit. Filmed in a 1950s-style bachelor pad, the bimonthly program is a farcical series of ad-libbed skits built around cocktails with names like the Volcano and the Red Oktober. Tiki Bar TV was launched on a lark about 10 months ago, and it attracts about 200,000 viewers, an audience the size of some established cable shows.

After years of hype, the Internet as TV is finally coming into its own. Never before has the opportunity been so great to take programming straight to the audience, circumventing the traditional film-industry production and distribution system. Until now, clever animated shorts or video clips that made a splash online have trod a well-worn path straight to TV, showing up on MTV, the Tonight Show, or even commercials (see BW, 1/30/06, "Three-Minute Moguls"). But not everyone considers online TV a stepping stone to Hollywood's bright lights.

Take Jeff Macpherson, the indie filmmaker in Vancouver who started Tiki Bar with his friends. He's getting plenty of attention from Hollywood types, but instead of trying to parlay Tiki Bar into a gig in big-budget TV or movies, Macpherson wants to raise money to create a series of similar shows for the Web. "This is the beginning of something big," Macpherson says. As people spend a growing portion of their lives online, some would-be movie moguls view Internet TV as an end in itself. Some are even finding that they can make money doing it.

Thank you to Randy for making life easy for me. The real mystery is only who was TC. He isn't a registered member of the Tiki Bar TV forums but found the new episode less than four hours of its posting and recognized Amanda from a 2 second profile. That sounds like a little bit too much, too fast for an amatuer. I suspect that TC may have been tipped off to the appearance in advance. TC if you are out there and willing to talk, I'm ready to listen.

I personally believe that this cameo represents the high level of esteem that the doctor holds for Amanda and her pioneering video podcast. I might go further and suggest that it was her show and the success it enjoys that got the doctor thinking about producing a show of his own.

Here is the best shot of him. I have ruled out my initial hunch of Cast member, 'Boyfriend with Woes', and it doesn't look like 'Limey'. We see Johnny-Johnny on camera with him. So who is this masked man, er, box-covered man? It must be a new person. Furthermore, is this person the same person who is using the Drink-Bot handle at the forum. I would suppose so.

Still there were many clues, I just needed to connect the dots. Here is what the dots spelt. This?

Alright, I admit it. Another anonymous tipster gave me this and I can't do a thing with it. Here is the frame by frame. The glasses seem to tie the whole thing together and of course the robot eyes. I have come to the conclusion that Lala is wearing glasses that belong to the one playing the Drink-Bot

Fez Spotted on Cameras in Vegas

While reviewing the Nov 18th Episode of "The Real Happy Hour" I came across this little snippet:

"Johnny Johnny is wearing a fez right now in Vegas. He is out in Vegas and I insisted that he get a fez and wear it. Because he is going to shoot some stuff for an episode. I said you can't be Johnny Johnny without a fez. And he is going through the airport with the fez."

Well with little to go on in terms of a time frame, "late summer", I knew I had a lot of security video to push through. Luckily for me, my contacts in Vegas are still intact and a guy like Johnny-Johnny and his entourage are unlikely to slip by unnoticed by dedicated floor crews. The tip came via the main floor at the Flamingo. Seems our bartender still likes to tip his hat to Bugsy. This information made the security camera search a much easier task.

Here we are late into the night, early into the morning, we pick up our man Johnny-Johnny on cameras 2 and 4.

I love it when a plan comes together.

Sarah is the TikiBar TV member with the FEZ. She registered on the first day with a post, "Doctor Tiki has shown me what love is. Good work on the new forum/website!" The again on the 27th. "I eagerly await whatever Doctor Tiki is mixing up tonight!" Johnny-Johnny instantly replied: "What the hell are you doing wearing my god damned hat!" He ws serious! Canadian Avenger said, "Indeed she does appear to be wearing your hat. Not only that she appears to have taken the picture at the scene of the crime. The background behind her looks suspiciously like the back wall of the Tiki Bar."

Well with the mention of CRIME my ears perked up. No doubt the evidence was mounting. First there was the hat, then she knew right away about the new forum. Then Johnny-Johnny is getting all bent out of shape. Nothing razzes that cat. Except maybe a dame. Then we got the doc, showing her what love is.

And then silence, no more posts, the line went dead. Maybe they got to her, shipped her out of the country. Do they have the internet in Belize. I don't think so.

So, I sent the picture of the Fez-headed girl off to the boys at the lab. Bingo, direct hit. My hunch was right, Thank you, Canadian Avenger. Concerned citizens are the eyes and ears of every safe city.

I call on those of you in Belize to keep an eye out for Sarah and send in an email (er, post card) with any information on her where about. We just want to talk to her. The law doesn't need to get invovled.

More info: OK, let me give you a little background on this. These are frames grabbed from a commercial. Some of you may have even seen it on TV. One viewer thought that it was her and passed that information on. So it really could be anywhere, and chosen for its look.

I cannot find any pictures of Toronto Airport that show a roof like this. So we are still at square one as far as I am concerned.

No one knew, but a full three weeks before episode 10 premiered, way back on October 28th, the Drinkbot published his first post on his own blog, appropriately enough, drink-bot.blogspot.com. All four posts were entered before he became famous and he even reveals a little of the plotline: "I would like to apologize for destroying parts of the city.

Johnny-Johnny posted to the site on Nov.2 with:
" You'll never learn to love, you metal monster!"

Wait there's more...

Two days before posting to Drink-Bot's site, Johnny-Johnny set up his own blogspot site at: tikijohnny.blogspot.com but titled: "Johnny's Home", "Meet the man in the Fez". and linking back to the Tiki Bar Blogspot site. Drink-Bot posted to it immediately.
